Hot Water & Heat Pumps Across Birmingham FAQs
- Why do I have no hot water when the heating still works?
- On a combi that usually points to the diverter valve or the plate heat exchanger. On a cylinder system it is more often the immersion, the motorised valve, the cylinder thermostat or a failed coil. We diagnose it properly before replacing anything.
- How long does it take to replace a hot water cylinder?
- A like-for-like cylinder swap is typically a one-day job. Converting from a vented cylinder to an unvented system takes longer because of the additional pipework, discharge arrangement and controls, and we confirm the timescale with your quote.
- What is an unvented cylinder and is it better?
- An unvented cylinder such as a Megaflo runs at mains pressure, so you get strong flow at every outlet without a loft tank. It suits homes with good incoming mains pressure and more than one bathroom. It has to be installed and serviced by a G3 qualified engineer, which we are.
- Do unvented cylinders need servicing?
- Yes, annually. The expansion vessel, pressure reducing valve and the temperature and pressure relief valves all need checking. Skipping it can invalidate the warranty and, more importantly, the safety devices are what keep the system safe.
- My hot water pressure is poor. What causes that?
- With a gravity fed cylinder it is often simply low head from the loft tank, which a pump can solve. With an unvented system it is more likely a partially closed valve, a blocked filter, a failed expansion vessel or a mains supply issue. We test the system to find which it is.
- Do you work on heat pumps?
- We support heat pump installations, including the cylinder, pipework and hot water side of the system, and we can advise on whether your existing radiators and cylinder are suitable before you commit to one.
