Kettling: a rumbling boil
A sound like a kettle coming to the boil means limescale or sludge has restricted the heat exchanger, so water overheats and steams in pockets. Left alone it stresses the exchanger and shortens the boiler's life.
Banging and knocking in the pipes
Sharp bangs when the heating starts or stops are usually pipework expanding against a joist or clip, or trapped air. Re-clipping and bleeding normally resolve it.
Whistling, humming and vibration
A whistle often means restricted flow through a partly closed valve. A hum or vibration usually points to the pump, with worn bearings or a pump running at too high a speed setting.
