Every condensing boiler produces acidic condensate that drains away through a plastic pipe. When that pipe runs outside and temperatures drop below freezing, it blocks with ice and the boiler locks out.
How to recognise it
The symptoms are a boiler that fails to fire after a cold night, a gurgling or bubbling sound from the appliance, and a fault code relating to condensate or blockage. Look for a white plastic pipe, usually 22mm or 32mm, leaving the wall near the boiler.
Thawing it safely
Only attempt this if the pipe is reachable from the ground:
- Pour warm, not boiling, water along the exposed length, especially at bends and the open end.
- Alternatively hold a hot water bottle against the frozen section.
- Once thawed, reset the boiler and it should fire normally.
- Never use boiling water, which can split the pipe, and never work at height on a ladder in icy conditions.
Stopping it happening again
Lagging with weatherproof insulation, increasing the pipe diameter, or re-routing the condensate internally to a soil stack are permanent fixes.
